I’ve seen a quite few ukulele comparison videos on YouTube, sometimes comparing ukes, sometimes comparing strings. The thing that I always struggle with though is the gap between the comparison – the bit where the put down one uke and pick up the next. My attention span is so short I forget what I’ve heard and struggle to compare. So I figured I’d try and edit one together that directly compared a couple of ukuleles…
The Comparison
For the video I’m pitting an Octopus Soprano against an Ohana SK-25. Let me get this out there, this is not a fair comparison. The Ohana SK-25 costs around £130 and the Octopus around £25. The spec is completely different. The only thing that is the same is the Aquila strings. Then again, there’s no real message to this other than have a listen and see what you think. I’m not trying to say one is better than the other. I like them both for different reasons. Really I was just having a play and seeing if I could manage the edit.
The kit
Nothing special here, filmed with an old iPhone with a very, very cheap mic connected to it. I could do with a better mic but the last one I bought isn’t much use. If anyone has any recommendations on cheap but decent mics please let me know! I’ve since bought a Blue Snowball ICE microphone which I use for pretty much all my recordings now.
I’m pretty pleased with the way the video came out although the editing was more of a pain than I wanted it to be. I had to desert my usual quick and dirty iMovie as I couldn’t work out the best way to overlay the clips. Let me know what you think.
That edit was really useful in hearing the differences between the ukes.
Thanks, glad you found it useful!
